[neuron-specific enolase] The approved gene symbol for NSE is ENO2 [enolase-2]

At least three genes encode the different isoforms of enolase. The enzyme (2-phospho-D-glycerate hydrolyase) catalyzes the interconversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in the glycolytic pathway. The different enzyme forms show distinct tissue distributions and also possess distinct biochemical and immunologic properties. NSE has been found to be identical with a 44 kDa neuronal survival factor isolated from bovine brain that acts as a survival factor for cultured neocortical neurons (see also: Neurotrophins ... ... ... ... ...
