[survival factor]
A general term sometimes used to indicate that certain cytokines or growth factors can maintain cells in culture for extended periods of time without essentially providing a growth stimulatory signal (see also: trophic factors). Such activities are referred to also as Maintenance factors or viability factors.
Factor deprivation often results in cell death by apoptosis (see also: Factor-dependent cell lines). Some mitogens also function as survival factors for certain cell types.
