[Hepatitis C virus NS5A protein; Hepatitis C virus nonstructural protein 5A; HCV NS5A protein] NS5A is a nonstructural protein encoded by hepatitis C virus and produced by processing of the viral polyprotein as a 56-58 kDa protein. NS5A modulates HCV replication as a component of replication complex (Shirota et al, 2002). NS5A is highly phosphorylated by cellular protein kinases and the phosphorylation sites are conserved among HCV genotypes (Katze et al, 2001; Kim et al, 1999). Benga WJ et al (2010) have reported that NS5A specifically interacts with apolipoprotein E. Silencing apolipoprotein E expression does not affect viral entry and replication but results in marked inhibition of infectious particle assembly and release.
