NB1 is a glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol-linked N-glycosylated cell surface glycoprotein of unknown function (Skubitz et al, 1991; Stroncek et al, 1990). The human gene has been cloned by Kissel et al (2001). The antigen is known also as HNA2A or CD177 (Stroncek, 2002) and the gene encoding NB1 has been found to be an allele of PRV1 (Bettinotti et al, 2002).
The antigen is expressed specifically on subsets of neutrophils and the proportion of neutrophils expressing NB1 is greater in woman than men and greater in pregnant versus non-pregnant women. (Matsuo et al, 2000). NB1 is first expressed at the myelocyte stage of myeloid differentiation. The percentages of myelocytes, metamyelocytes
