Mucroporin is a cationic host defense peptide from the venom of Lychas mucronatus (Chinese swimming scorpion). The mature peptide, LFGLIPSLIGGLVSAFK, is active against Staphylococcus aureus, including antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Mucroporin-M1 (LFRLIKSLIKRLVSAFK) is derived from Mucroporin by amino acid substitution and shows increased antibacterial activity. Both peptides act by disrupting the cell membrane of bacteria.
