The gene encoding KISS1 (145 amino acids; Kp-145, Kisspeptin-145) has been identified by Lee et al (1996) following observations by Welch et al (1994) suggesting the existence of a human gene the gene product of which suppresses the ability of melanomas and breast carcinomas to metastasize in athymic nude mice without affecting the tumorigenicity of the cells. The human KISS1 gene maps to chromosome 1q32-q41. West et al (1998) have reported a corrected sequence (encoding a protein of 145 amino acids).
