abbr. MS. This biochemically uncharacterized factor (47 and 65 kDa) is isolated from normal human and murine mammary epithelial cells. It appears to be expressed specifically in these tissues and its expression decreased in transformed mammary cells. Mammastatin selectively inhibits the growth of transformed mammary epithelial cell lines. It is inactive on non-mammary transformed cells lines. The factor is not identical with TGF-beta (Ervin et al, 1989). Mammastatin appears to be produced also by the normal human breast epithelial cell line MCF10A, together with mammary tumor stimulatory factors (Miller and Bukowski, 1994)
