Magu has been identified by Li and Tower (2009) in a search for Drosophila melanogaster genes that promote both longevity and fecundity. Magu is encoded by the CG2264 gene. Magu is a secreted protein and considered the Drosophila counterpart of the human regulator of angiogenesis, SMOC2 [secreted modular calcium-binding protein 2] and considered the Drosophila. The magu gene is conserved in human, chimpanzee, dog, cow, mouse, rat, chicken, mosquito, and Caenorhabditis elegans.
