[matrix metalloproteinase-13] According to a numerical nomenclature for matrix metalloproteinases this is the new name for Collagenase-3 (so named by Freije et al, 1994; gene symbol CLG3; abbr. also CL-3). The gene has been cloned by Freije et al (1994) and Mitchell et al, 1996). The human MMP-13 gene is composed of 10 exons and spans over 12.5 kb. The promoter contains a functional AP-1 motif which is able to confer responsiveness to a variety of tumor promoters (such as 12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate) and oncogene products (Pendas et al, 1997).
