(approved gene symbol) [Milk fat globule epidermal growth factor-8; milk fat globule EGF-8] The cDNA for this cell surface glycoprotein has been isolated by Stubbs et al (1990) from a cDNA library prepared from mouse mammary glands. The gene was named as MFGE8 since it is enriched in milk fat globules and contains amino acid sequences similar to that of Epidermal growth factor (EGF) and blood clotting factor VIII (Stubbs et al, 1990). The human homolog (387 amino acids) has been identified as a human milk fat globule protein (Larocca et al, 1991; Collins et al, 1997).
