[macrophage fusion factor] This factor is isolated from the conditioned medium of murine concanavalin A-stimulated thymocytes. It induces the fusion of bone marrow cells and alveolar macrophages to large multinucleated cells that produce high levels of IL1.
One factor responsible for this activity is identical with IL4. The activity of IL4 is stimulated considerably by IL6, IFN-gamma and GM-CSF. The MFF activity of the conditioned medium of cultured thymocytes is blocked only partially by antibodies against IL4. The residual activity is mainly attributed to
