This term has multiple meanings:
(-1-) The M11 cDNA was selected by differential hybridization screening as a gene involved in the cell cycle G1 phase progression of arterial smooth muscle cells (Gadeau et al, 1993). The sequence shows full homology with the osteopontin gene. Osteopontin overexpression in serum-stimulated quiescent and asynchronously cycling cells is associated with proliferation of smooth muscle cells. Osteopontin may thus play an important role in pathological processes that are associated with proliferation of arterial smooth muscle cells, such as atherosclerosis or restenosis.
