[Ly6/PLAUR domain containing 8] Lypd8, expressed selectively in epithelial cells at the uppermost layer of the large intestinal gland, is a protein secreted into the lumen where it binds flagellated bacteria including Proteus mirabilis. Lypd8 does not possess antimicrobial activity but binds to flagella and suppresses motility of flagellated bacteria, thus mediating segregation of intestinal bacteria and epithelial cells in the colon to preserve intestinal homeostasis. Lypd8 knock-out mice are highly sensitive to intestinal inflammation induced by dextran sulfate sodium. (Okumura R et al, 2016).
