[Leishmania initiation factor] This protein is encoded in the genome of Leishmania brasiliensis and Leishmania infantum. It is a homolog of eukaryotic ribosomal elongation and initiation factor-4a.
The purified protein strongly stimulates spleen cells from immunodeficient SCID mice to produce IL12, IL18, and high levels of IFN-gamma. LeIF also potentiates the cytotoxic activity of natural killer cells.
The receptor responsible for these activities is not known. TLR4 has been ruled out as a receptor because C3H/HeJ mice used in the studies have a defective TLR4 receptor.
