abbr. for latent TGF. The known isoforms of TGF-beta are secreted as latent complexes that contain the growth factor in an inactive form. Binding proteins are required for secretion and association of TGF-beta with the extracellular matrix, which also allows tissue-specific assocviation of the growth factor. Latent TGF-beta consists of a latency-associated peptide (TGF-LAP, which is the TGF-beta propeptide) bound to the 25 kDa TGF-beta by noncovalent interactions.
