Kupffer cells

These large star-shaped or pyramidal cells with a large oval nucleus and a small prominent nucleolus are called also stellate reticuloendothelial cells in older references. Kupffer cells are named after the German anatomist Karl Wilhelm von Kupffer (1829-1902). These cells are being referred to also as liver macrophages or hepatic macrophages. The terms Kupffer-Browicz cells, Browicz cells, or Browicz-Kupffer cells (Borowicz-Kupffer cells) found occasionalle in some older publications refer to Kupffer cells.
