Kappacin is the active form of Caseinomacropeptide, a heterogeneous C-terminal fragment (residues 106-169) of bovine milk kappa-casein (Malkoski et al, 2001). Kappacin corresponds to the nonglycosylated fragment of kappa-casein, i.e., casein-kappa(106-169), found in bovine milk. Kappacin A (kappa-casein-A) and Kappacin B (kappa-casein-B) differ from each other by an Asp148 to Ala148 substitution. The Asp148 to Ala148 substitution is responsible for the lesser antibacterial activity of Kappacin B (Dashper et al, 2005).
