This pentapeptide (Lys-Thr-Thr-Lys-Ser) is derived from the carboxyterminal propeptide of collagen type 1 (COL1A1; collagen-1-alpha-1). This propeptide is cleaved off extracellularly by specific peptidases, and several studies have suggested that N-terminal and C-terminal propeptides may be involved in feedback regulation of collagen biosynthesis (Wiestner et al, 1979; Paglia et al, 1979; Wu et al, 1986: Aycock et al, 1986; Katayama et al, 1991; Fouser et al, 1991) KTTKS constitutes the minimal bioactive sequence of the propeptide (Katayama et al, 1993).
