KLK5 is a trypsin-like serine protease (Michael et al, 2005) related to other members of the family of kallikreins. Originally, the protein was identified and cloned from extracts of skin corneocytes by Brattsand and Egelrud (1999) who referred to it as SCTE [Stratum corneum tryptic enzyme] and suggested a role in the shedding of corneocytes during the process of desquamation.
