Murine KIRRE is a mammalian homolog of the Drosophila melanogaster KIRRE [kin of irre] (called also dumbfounded; abbr. duf) gene (also: CG3653), an immunoglobulin-like cell adhesion molecule that functions during embryonic muscle development and is involved in the formation of polynucleate myotubes that arise by fusion of myoblasts (Strünkelnberg et al, 2001, 2003). The protein has been identified independently as NEPH2 [nephrin-like-2]. The approved gene symbol for this protein is KIRREL3 [kin of IRRE like 3; Kin of irregular chiasm-like protein 3
