[Jopock] This murine gene has been identified by Kong et al (2003). The gene is expressed during early gastrulation. The encoded protein is bacteriotoxic. Ectopic expression in eukaryotic teratocarcinoma F9 cells causes cell death by apoptosis by reducing mitochondrial membrane potential, increasing the production of reactive oxygen species, and probably by interfering with the expression of BCL family members at the transcriptional level. Deletion mutants of the protein lacking a transmembrane have the same activity as the wild-type protein (Kong et al, 2005).
Kim et al (2007) have reported that the expression of Jpk is induced by endoplasmic reticulum stress and that this inhibits cell cycle progression in F9 teratocarcinoma cells.
