[immune-associated nucleotide-5] This protein is a member of a larger protein family. It is encoded by a gene identical with the rat Iddm1 [insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus 1] gene, which is responsible for the peripheral T-cell lymphopenia (lyp) phenotype (Michalkiewicz et al, 2004), and essential for the development of type 1 diabetes in diabetes-prone rats (MacMurray et al, 2002). Hessner et al (2004) have suggested that the lymphopenia due to the lyp mutation may result in a deregulation of cells involved in insulitis and beta-cell destruction.
Sandal et al (2003) have identified the same gene as IROD [
