This protein has been identified by Takito et al (1996). Takito et al (1999) have shown that Hensin is the rabbit ortholog of the human DMBT1 [deleted in malignant brain tumors 1] gene (approved gene symbol) and represents a distinct alternatively spliced isoform. Hensin - which is Japanese for “change in body” - is expressed in the collecting tubules of the rabbit kidney and is secreted by renal intercalated cells, which mediate acid-base transport and are responsible for acidification and alkalinization of urine (Schwartz et al, 1985). Hensin is produced by the two main functionally distinct subtypes of intercalated cells
