[heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A1] The protein encoded by the HNRNPA1 is part of a large (more than 20 proteins) nuclear ribonucleoprotein complex in eukaryotic cells containing nascent RNA polymerase II transcripts and functions as a general pre-RNA-binding protein. The human gene has been cloned by Biamonti et al (1989) and the cDNA by Buvoli et al (1988). Splice variants have been described (Buvoli et al, 1988, 1990).
HNRPA1 shuttles between nucleus and cytoplasm and may function as a carrier for RNA during export to the cytoplasm (Michael et al, 1995). Kashima et al (2007) have implicated HNRNPA1 in splicing, functioning as a splice site repressor.
