This cell line was established from a 36 year old female patient with acute promyelocytic leukemia. The cells lack specific markers for lymphoid cells (see also: hematopoiesis). They express receptors for Fc and complement.
The cells grow into colonies in soft agar (see also: Colony formation assay), display phagocytotic activity, respond to a variety of chemotactic stimuli (see also: Chemotaxis) and can be induced to differentiate into monocytes and granulocytes by various cytokines. This is associated with the downregulation of the expression of Myeloblastin. HL-60 cells
