[Herpesvirus Ig-like receptor] The gene encoding this receptor has been cloned by Cocchi et al (1998). Expression of the protein confers susceptibility to herpes simplex virus (HSV-1, HSV-2, and bovine herpesvirus 1) infection on a highly resistant cell line (J1.1-2 cells). HIgR appears to be an alternative splice variant of PRR1 [poliovirus receptor-related-1]. The protein is expressed widely among human cell lines susceptible to HSV infection and commonly used for HSV studies. Expression is particularly high in the nervous system.
The viral ligand of HIgR and PRR1 is glycoprotein D, a constituent of the virion envelope.
