HGTD-P
[HIF-1 alpha-responsive pro-apoptotic molecule] This protein has been identified by Lee et al (2004). The expression of this protein is regulated by the transcription factor HIF-1-alpha (Hypoxia-inducible factor-1-alpha). Overexpressed HGTD-P localizes to mitochondria and facilitates cell death by apoptosis. Inhibition of HGTD-P expression protects cells against hypoxic cell death.
The gene has been identified independently by Charpentier et al (2000) as E2IG5 [E2-induced gene 5], a gene the expression of which is upregulated in breast cancer cells in response to estrogens.
