This is me, Horst Ibelgaufts, the author of COPE (and just in case you have strong feelings against smoking: as pointed out in the entry about myself, the pipe is a stone found at the beach and does have some significance for me).

COPE is an extremely cross-referenced encyclopedia started many years ago (see also: Some personal remarks). COPE covers an extraordinary broad array of complex and extensively referenced information. COPE also conveniently organizes information in topic-specific subdictionaries. I suppose nowadays the more appropriate term to use is "bioinformatic initiative". After all, bioinformatics does not only create new information but also consolidates available information. In one way or other COPE does both. I can only hope that the "COPE Bioinformatics Initiative" will be more successful in attracting a bit of corporate funding from "sponsored research" or "extramural reseach" funds where the simple COPE encyclopedia failed more or less in the past. What could be more "target audience-oriented" in the field of communication biology than COPE?
If access numbers, COPE Reviews, and correspondence are anything to go by, many people in research and industry appreciate COPE and make frequent use of it . If you are one of them and want to support my work, you can do so in many different ways according to means and inclination.
The most obvious ways of supporting COPE:
• make a little money donation
• place a banner ad linking back to your site. The various options available won't cost the world.
• subscribe to COPE's quarterly market intelligence/strategic business development information
• provide an unrestricted educational grant (depending on conditions, this will include multiple free banners and may come also with some strategic business development information)
The ultimate option:
• buy or licence COPE exclusively on a long-term basis with me as a consultant author continuing the work. This would offer a plethora of possibilities. Just contact me.
• A company may be interested also in making use of the manuscript of
"LOVE IN CYTOKINELAND". Read an excerpt of this "degranulating" tale that, more than anything else, shows that cytokines can be great clean fun indeed (NO SEX!). For a similar tale (in German only) see: ALANIN UND DIE WUNDERLAMPE.
Other ways of promoting work on COPE:
• provide hardcopy or pdf reprint(s) of articles pertaining to entries of COPE
• grant permission to use images/graphics for inclusion in COPE pages (with due credits, of course)
• provide other information for COPE entries (see: COPEAdopt and CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS)
• sponsor on-line access to a scientific journal
• sponsor on-line access to data-bases that require subscription fees
• sponsoring the acquisition of a Macintosh lap top and a PC and/or suitable software
