[homocysteine-induced gene 2] This widely expressed gene has been cloned from rat vascular smooth muscle cells. Ectopic expression of the encoded protein of 142 amino acids in endothelial cells induces cell death by apoptosis (Chen et al, 2000). Li et al (2000) have implicated HCY2 expression in neural tube defects and congenital heart defects.
