[homolog of ASY protein] This human gene encodes a protein the expression of which promotes cell death by apoptosis (Qu et al, 2002). The protein localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and induces cell death by apoptosis by the depletion of the ER calcium ion stores.
Xu et al (2006) have stated that HAP is identical with Reticulon-3 (abbr. RTN3; hence the designation RTN3/HAP). They have shown that overexpression of HAP causes the activation of caspase-12 and caspase-3.
