[human alpha-lactalbumin made lethal to tumor cells] Alpha-lactalbumin [lactalbumin-alpha; approved gene symbol: LALBA] is a major milk protein. It is synthesized only in the lactating mammary gland, where it combines with Beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase to form the lactose synthase complex. Alpha-lactalbumin serves as a regulatory subunit that lowers the Km for glucose, and this permits synthesis of lactose under physiological conditions. Thus, the protein is being referred to also as Lactose synthase B protein (Permyakov and Berliner, 2000). Owing to shared primary and secondary structures shared with C-type lysozymes (McKenzie, 1996), the protein is being referred to also as LYZL7 [Lysozyme-like protein 7].
