Grueneberg neurons

[Grueneberg neuron]

correct spelling: Grüneberg neurons. This cell type, described originally by Grüneberg (1973) and frequently referred to as GG neurons [Grueneberg ganglion neurons], constitutes a small cluster of specialised ciliated neurons found in the Grueneberg ganglion, a rostral olfactory subsystem found in several mammalian species (for overview see: Fleischer and Breer, 2010; Brechbühl et al, 2014). These neurons project axonal processes to the olfactory bulb of the brain and respond to volatile danger molecules known as alarm pheromones and kairomones (Brechbühl et al, 2008, 2013, 2013) and elicit fear reactions (Debiec and Sullivan, 2014).
