symbol: gd. This Drosophila melanogaster protein is encoded by gene CG1505. Gastrulation-defective has been identified as a gene that affects the dorsal-ventral polarity of the fly embryo. Konrad et al (1998) have cloned the gastrulation-defective gene. Han et al (2000) have demonstrated that the gastrulation-defective protein is a serine protease and that the three genes nudel, pipe, and windbeutel act to restrict gastrulation-defective activity to the ventral side of the embryo.
LeMosy et al (2001) have shown that Gastrulation-defective activates the serine protease Snake, which in turn activates serine protease Easter. Easter
