Galectin-3 is a beta-galactoside-binding protein. It is identical with Mac-2 (macrophage galactose-specific lectin-2), a lectin that binds galactose and IgE and that is secreted by inflammatory macrophages but expressed also as a cell surface factor (Sato and Hughes, 1994). Galectin is identical with L-29, a soluble lactose-binding lectin abundantly expressed and phosphorylated in confluent polarized Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells
