[gene related to anergy in lymphocytes] GRAIL is a 66 kDa type 1 transmembrane glycoprotein that localizes to the endocytic pathway and bears homology to RING zinc finger proteins. The protein is known also as RNF128 [RING finger protein 128], which is the approved gene symbol. Its expression is induced in anergic CD4(+) cells, which are characterized by their inability to produce IL2 and proliferate. The protein functions as an E3 ubiquitin ligase. GRAIL expression becomes upregulated in the CD4(+) CD25(-) T-cells with an anergic phenotype (Ermann et al, 2001) and is necessary for anergy induction (Seroogy et al, 2004). T-cell
