[GEL homology domains]
[gelsolin/severin/villin homology domain; gelsolin homology domain] This domain of 120-150 amino acids is found in a variety of proteins involved in cytoskeletal regulation, particularly those functioning in actin severing (Puius et al, 1998). The domain can bind calcium and actin and renders actin binding regulatable by calcium ions.
Gelsolin is a protein composed of six GEL homology domains. The protein binds to the barbed ends of actin filaments. It prevents monomer exchange and acts as an end-blocking or capping protein for the actin filament. Gelsolin can promote also actin nucleation to create new filaments and can sever existing filaments.
