approved gene symbol for Glycyl-tRNA synthetase. Abbr. also: GlyRS, GRS. The enzyme is being referred to also as Glycine-tRNA ligase. GARS catalyzes the attachment of glycine to tRNA-gly in the cytoplasm and mitochondria and thus plays an essential role in protein synthesis. The corresponding cDNAs and genes have been cloned by Ge et al (1994), Shiba et al (1994), and Williams et al (1995). The enzyme (EC6.1.1.14 in the enzyme nomenclature catalogue) contains a distinct protein domain that is thought to be critical for function and is found only in aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (see: WHEP domain).
