Ficoll

[Ficoll gradient centrifugation, Ficoll gradient, Ficoll gradients]

Ficoll is a synthetic polymer made by copolymerisation of sucrose and epichlorhydrin.

Ficoll is a widely used medium for density centrifugation. Discontinuous Ficoll gradient centrifugation exploits physical properties such as density and size and is used, among other things, to enrich and fractionate, from cord blood or bone marrow hematopoietic stem cells and other hematopoietic progenitors derived from these cells (see also: hematopoiesis) (Charbord et al, 1992; Cottler-Cox et al, 1993; Iacone et al, 1991; Jones et al, 1990; Law et al, 1988; Niskanen et al, 1985; Wagner et al, 1992). Ficoll has been used widely in clinical practice for separating lymphocytes from other cells in blood. (Friedenstein, 1995; Böyum 1968)
