also: FYVE finger. The acronym for this conserved protein domain is derived from the first four proteins found to contain this motif (Fab1, YotB, Vac1p, and EEA1) (Stenmark et al, 1996). FYVE domains are conserved cysteine-rich double zinc finger domains that bind with high specificity to phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate, which is highly enriched in early endosomes (Burd and Emr, 1998; Gaullier et al, 1998; Patki et al, 1997, 1998).
