[femininization-1] The Caenorhabditis elegans FEM1 gene is essential for male phenotype development in the nematode. The human and mouse FEM1 homologous proteins, FEM1a [FEM1-alpha; fem-1 homolog a] and FEM1b [FEM1-beta; fem-1 homolog b], show >99 % homology at the amino acid level (Ventura-Holman and Maher, 2000; Krakow et al, 2001). Both murine genes are expressed during embryogenesis. The FEM1a gene is expressed highly in adult heart and skeletal muscle. The FEM1b gene is expressed highly in adult testis (Ventura-Holman et al, 1998).
