[fibrinogen/angiopoietin-related protein] The gene for this secreted protein of 405 amino acids was isolated from a human dermal papilla cell cDNA library by Lee et al (2001). The protein contains domains that are conserved in angiopoietin-1 and related factors. FARP differs from another angiopoietin-related protein, HFARP, by only 18 amino acids in its N-terminus and is thought to represent ANGPTL4 [Angiopoietin-like-4].
FARP mRNA is abundant in the liver, placenta, prostate, and ovary in human adult tissues. It is expressed also in the fetal liver and lung carcinoma cell line.
