Erbitux
also known as cetuximab. A chimaeric monoclonal human-mouse antibody (ImClone Systems, Inc., New York), which binds with high affinity to the EGF receptor and, as a competitive inhibitor, inhibits its activation by endogenous ligands (EGF, TGF-alpha). This blocks cell proliferation, enhances cell death by apoptosis, and interferes with tumor angiogenesis.
The inhibitor has been approved for use against colorectal cancer and is expected to be of utility in the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, non-small cell lung cancer and pancreatic cancer (Harding and Burtness, 2005).
