Epithelins are small cysteine-rich approximately 6 kDa proteins. These proteins have been isolated initially from rat kidney tissue and have now been isolated also as cDNAs from murine and human tissues. Studies in rodents by Daniel et al (2000) have demonstrated that the granulin/epithelin precursor is expressed constitutively and strongly in epithelia of the skin, gastrointestinal tract, and the reproductive system. Other epithelia express the gene less strongly. Progranulin is expressed also in immune cells in vivo and in specific neurons in the brain.
The two known epithelins are Epithelin-1 (56 amino acids) and Epithelin-2
