Eledoisin is a neuropeptide, QPSKDAFIGLMamide, identified in Eledone cirrhosa (Curled octopus) (Ozaena cirrosa) and Eledone moschata (Musky octopus) (Ozaena moschata) (Anastasi and Erspamer, 1963). It was first isolated from the posterior salivary glands of two mollusk species Eledone muschata and E. aldovandi belonging to the octopod Cephalopoda (De Marco and Gatti, 1975).
The peptide belongs to the family of tachykinins and displays the full spectrum of activity of the mammalian tachykinins (for overview see: Severini et al, 2002). Eledoisin is thought to act through neurokinin receptor subtypes NK2 and NK3 (Schwyzer, 1987). Eledoisin shows the highest affinity and selectivity for bladder NK2 receptor
