Echinometrin

This peptide (LRKLMLQR) has been isolated from the coelomic fluid of Echinometra lucunter, an abundant sea urchin found in Brazilian waters (Sciani et al, 2014). The peptide elicits inflammatory reactions (paw edema, leukocyte recruitment) and diminishes pain threshold. Peptide administration induces degranulation of mouse mast cells in vivo. Sequence alignment indicates that Echinometrin is a cryptide derived from vitellogenin, an abundant nutrient protein present in the gametogenic cells of sea urchins. The peptide has no antimicrobial activities.
