[Elastase-specific inhibitor] This protein has been purified from sputum of patients with chronic bronchitis (Sallenave and Ryle, 1991). ESI appears to be a biologically active fragment of a larger molecule described in the skin of patients with psoriasis, termed elafin. The full-length protein has been isolated also from bronchial secretions from a patient suffering from bronchial carcinoma (Sallenvale et al, 1992).
