The gene encoding ERN1has been cloned by Tirasophon et al (1998) who concluded that human ERN1 is equivalent to a Saccharomyces cerevisia gene that functions as a sensor for the unfolded protein response, monitoring the status of unfolded protein inside the ER lumen.
