abbr. UPR. The unfolded protein response is a cellular quality control process initiated by an abnormal accumulation of unfolded or misfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum, a condition generally termed ER stress [endoplasmic reticulum stress]. The unfolded protein response is subject to numerous physiological and pathological stimuli, which may differ, depending upon the specific cell type, and utilises several distinct pathways involving different endoplasmic reticulum stress sensor protein complexes (for overview see: Hetz C et al, 2020).
