This term has multiple meanings:
(-1-) early pregnancy factor
This factor is associated with early pregnancy. EPF can be detected in serum within hours of fertilization and links fertilization and immunomodulation. EPF is a protein of 10.84 kDa released from dividing embryonic cells. Platelets have been identified as an extremely rich source of EPF (Cavanagh and Morton, 1994), but the factor is produced also by a variety of tumor cells and transformed cell lines (Quinn et al, 1990). Quinn et al (1994) have reported production of EPF during liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy.
