This cell line has been established from an AIDS-related Kaposi sarcoma. The cells secrete large amounts of immunoreactive and biologically active IL6 into the conditioned medium and also express the IL6 receptor. Introduction of an antisense oligonucleotide directed against IL6 blocks proliferation by two-thirds, suggesting that IL6 acts as an autocrine growth factor in these cells (Miles et al, 1990).
